Powerboats and RIBs - a fast and exciting way to get into boating!

We provide powerboat training courses (almost) all year round in association with the Galway Hooker Sailing Club, which is an ISA recognized training center. We cover the Irish Sailing syllabus and upon course completion your certificate will be issued via Irish Sailing.

Courses

Introduction to Powerboating

  • Designed to give beginners the basic knowledge and skills required to become competent crew
  • Learn to safely handle a powerboat, perform basic manoeuvres such as coming alongside, securing to a mooring.
  • Understand the important checks before operating an engine
  • Know the standard set of knots required for boating

  Note: This course is a taster and it is recommended to follow with the IS Level 2 National Powerboating Certificate course.

National Powerboat Certificate (NPC)

  • Develop the skills and knowledge necessary to safely, and effectively, skipper an open powerboat, by day, on inland and coastal waters with which they are familiar.
  • Develop skills and knowledge to safely take charge and be the skipper of an open powerboat, by day, without supervision in familiar waters.
  • Understand boat preparation and handling both afloat and ashore.

Note: This course is the “driving licence” of boating. At Galway Bay Boat Tours our variety of boats means that you will learn to handle both inboard and outboard engines and navigate using both console and tiller steer. It is also possible to receive tuition onboard your own boat.

Each course is a mix of shore/classroom based theory and on the water activity – more time is spent afloat to allow for more hands-on experience. 

Ideally we need a minimum number to run the course – so rope in your mates or join in with another group and make new friends!
